5/18/22 Prompt #9

“For the people! For the palace! For the kingdom! Knights of…” I never heard what my commander was going to say because a boulder from the enemy fell on top of him a moment later.

As it did, people started screaming and ran around in a panic. My eyes widened at the sight of the wall behind us crumbling. For a split second, as I turned, I saw the fields in which my brothers fought. They were filled with fallen knights, not of just our kingdom but of others. Even worse, there were hardly any bodies of the enemy down. As the enemy filled my view, I felt this tugging sensation at my heart and stomach. Overhead, giant, creepy birds soared.

“You look like you’re about to pee your pants,” one of the enemies told me, leaping through the mess of the destroyed wall.

“Yeah, well, you look like… like a monster who had plastic surgery fifty times,” I shot back, clumsily taking out my sword.

“Oh yeah? I thought that was obvious. I mean, did you see your friends back there? They’re all dead, every one of them,” he boasted.

“Oh, I’m aware. It just fuels my anger more,” I replied. Okay, I guess I lied to the man. Instead of anger, it’s more like fear.

He charged me; I dodged him, then countered his attack with a parry. While I did so, he avoided it and went to stab me in the gut. However, before he even moved his sword towards me, I kicked his knee, which made him fall, then severed his heart.
