Ode to Dirt
Dirt. Dirt that carries millions of years.
History. It carries history of things we do not
know and things we do know. Like an all-knowing historian.
Smells like battles, hopes, and dinosaurs.
Feels like thousands upon millions of sand running
through your hands when dry.
When wet, it feels like a brick. Hard. Strong. Compacted.
It keeps all the precious metals and
minerals inside safe, and sound.
Keeps the lava deep underground,
And helps plants plant their roots to survive.
Helps ants build their little colonies,
And bunnies, moles, groundhogs…
all live in dirt.
Dirt, which is very helpful.
Dirt, that is taken for granted.
